Rule Name:Hunting and Foraging on the Road
GM NOTE: Much of this is affected by the new Hunting and Plant & Herb Lore descriptions detailing how much food is found with a give roll. This document can still be used to determine modifiers for finding food while on the road.

As the adventurers travel from place to place, they will usually want to try to forage and hunt for food along the way so as to save on food costs. Choose the situation that applies:

By Road on Horseback
The group is traveling over a moderately well travelled road well outside established farmlands. Either the entire group is on horseback or some of the group is on horseback while others ride in wagons. Those in the wagons will be of no assistance in foraging for food. Those hunting and foraging are ranging away from the road from time to time to find food.
  • Hunting - Characters with Hunting skill can find and kill animals to provide meat. Effective rank equals average of Hunting skill, Horsemanship skill and Ranged Weapon skill. Bonus is ((DEX-15) x 3) + (Effective Rank x 5) - 30. The GM may apply a modifier based on scarcity of game. The -30 modifier is because the primary purpose of the group is to travel. If the group takes a day just to hunt, the modifier does not apply.
  • Foraging - Characters with Survival skill can find edible plants. Use the Find Food task of Survival skill but apply a -30 bonus since the primary purpose of the group is travel vs. foraging. If the group takes a day just to forage for food, the modifier does not apply.

By Road on Foot
The group is traveling over a moderately well travelled road well outside established farmlands. Most of the group is on foot though some may be riding in wagons. Those in the wagons will be of no assistance in foraging for food.
  • Hunting - Characters with Hunting skill can find and kill animals to provide meat. Effective rank equals average of Hunting skill and Ranged Weapon skill. Bonus is ((DEX-15) x 3) + (Effective Rank x 5) - 40. The GM may apply a modifier based on scarcity of game. The -40 modifier is because the primary purpose of the group is to travel. If the group takes a day just to hunt, the modifier does not apply.
  • Foraging - Characters with Survival skill can find edible plants. Use the Find Food task of Survival skill but apply a -40 bonus since the primary purpose of the group is travel vs. foraging and edible plants are not as likely to be found close to a road. If the group takes a day just to forage for food, the modifier does not apply.

Through the Wilderlands on Horseback
The group is traveling through the wilderness (any type of terrain). Either the entire group is on horseback or some of the group is on horseback while others ride in wagons. Those in the wagons will be of no assistance in foraging for food.
  • Hunting - Characters with Hunting skill can find and kill animals to provide meat. Effective rank equals average of Hunting skill, Horsemanship skill and Ranged Weapon skill. Bonus is ((DEX-15) x 3) + (Effective Rank x 5) - 15. The GM may apply a modifier based on scarcity of game. The -15 modifier is because the primary purpose of the group is to travel. If the group takes a day just to hunt, the modifier does not apply.
  • Foraging - Characters with Survival skill can find edible plants. Use the Find Food task of Survival skill but apply a -20 bonus since the primary purpose of the group is travel vs. foraging. If the group takes a day just to forage for food, the modifier does not apply.

Through the Wilderlands on Foot
The group is traveling through the wilderness (any type of terrain). The entire group is on foot.
Use the Find Food task of Survival skill but apply a -10 bonus since the primary purpose of the group is travel vs. foraging. If the group takes a day just to forage for food, the modifier does not apply.

(round up fractions)
Result
Description
Absolute Success
Feed 1 person per rank.
Success
Feed 1 person per 2 ranks.
Near Success
Feed 1 person per 3 ranks.
Partial Success
Feed 1 person per 5 ranks.
Failure
Fail to find food.
Absolute Failure
Attempt leads to hostile encounter of moderate difficulty. *
Blunder
Attempt leads to hostile encounter of heavy or even extreme difficulty. *
* If Absolute Failure or Blunder is rolled, remove the negative modifiers for movement and scarcity of game to determine new result. If not Absolute Failure or Blunder, treat as simple Failure.
Example
Delana, mounted on Mystia, is foraging for food as the group travels by road from Herigund to Parderaan. Her normal Find Food bonus is 20%. Her movement penalty (Foraging - By Road on Horseback) is -30, and the GM has decided that food is very scarce and has applied another -30 modifier, giving her a total modifier of -40 (20 - 30 - 30 = -40). She rolls a 10, giving her a result of -30 - a Blunder. The rules state that if an Absolute Failure or Blunder is rolled, resolve again without the negative modifiers for movement (-30) and scarcity of game (-30). That would result in +30 (20 + 10 = 30). The roll is treated as a simple failure instead of a Blunder.
