No more than half (rounded up) of a cleric's spells of a given level can be the same spell. For example, if a cleric is able to pray for three 1st level spells, he cannot take three Cure Light Wounds spells. He could take a maximum of two Cure Light Wound spells (half of 3, rounded up).
Gods want their clerics to use a diverse range of spells, and not concentrate all of their holy power on a single spell. In extreme situations, exceptions might be granted. For example, if a cleric is allowed four 2nd level spells, and REALLY needs four Resist Fire spells to allow the group to survive a difficult challenge that is beneficial for the cleric's religion, the cleric might be allowed to pray for four Resist Fire spells. |
