Sometimes players need or want experience points more than they want magic items. This ruling will allow a character to "give up" a magic item and gain experience points for it. By giving it up, the character cannot gain anything else for it. For example, if they sell it to someone, this rule does not apply because they are gaining money for the magic item. There are a few ways that a magic item can be given up.
- Donation - The character donates the magic item to a worthy cause. This might be a temple or an orphanage. Perhaps it is given to someone who has better use for the magic item.
- Lost Function - For some reason, the magic of the item ceases to work. The player and GM must both agree to this. The GM can come up with a semi-plausible reason.
- Lost - The magic item is inexplicably lost. Perhaps the character was traversing a bridge and the magic item slipped from their hand and was lost.
In any case, the magic item is irrevocably gone.
The base amount of EXP earned for giving up a magic item is equal to the power level of the magic item times 500. This assumes a magic item that was useful to the character that they will miss when given up. If it is a magic item they have that they didn't have much use for, then the amount is halved. It is a highly useful magic item that the character used regularly, the amount can be doubled or even tripled (or more). For example, if Harlan chose to give up his Ring of Regeneration, he would earn at least triple the base amount.
The magic item being given up, must belong to the character. It can't be a party magic item that they are carrying. |
