Julie Nelson, the runner from Eyota, Minnesota, has made a significant impact in the local running community. She began her running journey in high school, influenced by her older sister who was involved in track. Nelson's running career continued through high school at Dover-Eyota and into college at the University of Nebraska, where she participated in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field.
Her personal records are impressive, including a mile time of 4:48, a 3000m time of 9:39, a 5000m time of 17:00, a 10000m time of 36:35, a half marathon time of 1:22, and a marathon time of 2:48. One of her fondest running memories is from a cross country race at the University of Minnesota, where she represented Nebraska but enjoyed competing in her home state.
In 2006, Nelson demonstrated remarkable improvement, evidenced by her performance in races such as the 5K (17:48), 10K (36:45), and 15K (57:28). This improvement was attributed to enhanced training and feeling better overall. Her training philosophy revolves around maintaining the fun aspect of running, with a typical in-season week involving 50-60 miles, including long runs and intense workouts like 10x1 mile or 20x400 during marathon training.
Nelson also balances her running with family life and a full-time job, demonstrating her dedication and ability to manage multiple responsibilities. She enjoys training mostly alone but also values morning runs with friends and particularly enjoys training with her sister.
Her story is an inspiration to many in the running community, showcasing how dedication, balance, and a love for the sport can lead to personal success and fulfillment
